Computer and Internet Safety
There are a number of steps you should take to protect your computer and Internet environment. We
recommend that you consider the following measures to protect your computer:
- Use anti-virus and anti-spyware software. We recommend setting them to auto-update.
- Use a personal firewall with default settings at the very minimum. This can prevent unauthorized people from gaining access to your computer while you are connected to the Internet. You can find firewall hardware or software at most computer stores, or you may consider the one of these sites:
- Make sure you are using the most recent version of your Internet browser.
- Set your computer's operating system to receive automatic updates if possible. If not, you may download and install updates manually. For more information on how to protect your personal
computer:
- Do not enable automatic login or prefill the username or password fields.
- Change your password periodically and avoid using passwords that you frequently use for other purposes.
- If you use a wireless network, take precautions to secure it. Remember that public hot spots may not be secure.
- Always log off after using your software.
Identity Theft
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personally identifying information like your name, Social
Security number or credit card number without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes. We
recommend reviewing some of the information below, including the listed resources.
- Check your credit report regularly. You can order one free report per year from each credit bureau.
Make sure each bureau's credit information is correct.
- experian.com
- equifax.com
- transunion.com
- Review your statements frequently and report any unusual activity immediately.
- Be suspicious of any email with urgent requests for personal financial information.
- Don't click on links in an email if you suspect the message might not be authentic.
- Choose complex passwords that are difficult to guess and change them on a regular basis. Compose alpha and numeric passwords whenever possible. Memorize your passwords and never share them with anyone.
- Always report lost or stolen cards to your financial institution immediately.
- Guard your mail and trash from theft. Deposit outgoing mail at your local US Post Office and promptly remove all mail from your mailbox.
- Secure personal information in your home and use shredders routinely.
